The Hamilton family owned the paddle steamer "Brodick"
in the 1830. This operation was developed by Adam Hamilton and
evolved into the Cloy Line run by his sons George and Gavin
Hamilton. In 1895 they built their first steam lighter, the
"Glencloy". Construction took place on
the banks of the Glencloy Water, very close to where the centre
of Brodick village is now located.. She was made of locally
harvested timber and after her launch was towed to Glasgow to be
fitted with her engine. It is possible that this was the only
vessel they built themselves.
G & G Hamilton Ltd. merged in 1963 with J Hay & Sons Ltd to form Hay Hamilton Ltd, which entity merged
with Ross & Marshall Ltd in 1968
to become Glenlight Shipping Ltd.
